esearch and Technology and Higher Education Minister M. Nasir has revealed plans to build a nuclear reactor park to support science education.
According to Nasir, the park will be an energy experiment lab managed by the National Atomic Energy Agency (Batan).
"Nuclear energy has been perceived as a negative issue in Indonesia. I want to prove that Batan can produce good energy and that the park can serve as a fun place to learn as well as a tourist destination," said Nasir as quoted by tempo.co.
Nasir added that the lab would be built to provide 10-20 million megawatts and the development would begin in 2016 and take one year to complete.
Serpong in South Tangerang, Banten province, has been chosen as the location since it is close to the Tangerang-based Center for Science and Technology Research (Puspiptek).
Nasir said that the lab's development was part of Indonesia's nuclear power plant (PLTN) development plan, which had been included in the 2015-2019 National Mid-Term Development Plan (RPJM) stipulated by the ministry.
"Hopefully the process will be quick. We want everything to be easy with no entrapping regulation, since it is part of the ministry's RPJM," said Nasir. (kes)(+++)
