National scene: KPK detains ex-Hutama Karya manager

T

he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has detained Budi Rachmat Kurniawan, the former general manager of state-owned construction company PT Hutama Karya, for his role in a marine school building project in Sorong, Papua.

Budi allegedly inflated the project'€™s costs, causing Rp 40 billion in state losses.

'€œBased on strong evidence, also for concerns that [Budi] would get away or destroy the evidence, the suspect will be detained for 20 days,'€ said KPK spokesman Priharsa Nugraha, as quoted by kompas.com.

Budi'€™s lawyer Aryo Wibowo said his client respected the KPK'€™s move since the case investigation was already complete. He said that Budi would follow due legal process. '€œWe respect the legal process and will defend [Budi] during the trial,'€ said Aryo.

The KPK has also detained Transportation Ministry officials Sugiharto and Irawan for their involvement in making the project'€™s contract.
