he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has detained Budi Rachmat Kurniawan, the former general manager of state-owned construction company PT Hutama Karya, for his role in a marine school building project in Sorong, Papua.
Budi allegedly inflated the project's costs, causing Rp 40 billion in state losses.
'Based on strong evidence, also for concerns that [Budi] would get away or destroy the evidence, the suspect will be detained for 20 days,' said KPK spokesman Priharsa Nugraha, as quoted by kompas.com.
Budi's lawyer Aryo Wibowo said his client respected the KPK's move since the case investigation was already complete. He said that Budi would follow due legal process. 'We respect the legal process and will defend [Budi] during the trial,' said Aryo.
The KPK has also detained Transportation Ministry officials Sugiharto and Irawan for their involvement in making the project's contract.
