he Singaporean-flagged tanker Joaquim, which was laden with 3,500 metric tons of crude oil worth US$700,000, has been hijacked on its way from Tanjung Pinang, Riau Islands, to Langkawi, Malaysia.
Riau Police chief spokesman Adj. Sr. Comr. Aryo Tejo said on Monday that eight of the crew members, seven of them Indonesians and a Malaysia, survived the attack.
The Indonesians have been identified as skipper Nosu Jhon Dumendehe (of Sangir, North Sulawesi), Saiful Aripin (Flores), Parma Sembiring (Medan), Khairul Aman (Gresik), Aman Girsang (Medan), Budi and Santoso (South Sumatra) and Sem (Malaysia).
Aryo Tejo said the hijacking took place on Sunday several miles off Port Dickson, Malaysia.
According to Aryo, the five pirates were able to catch up with the tanker by speedboat. After climbing the port side of the tanker, they immediately immobilized the crew members by threatening them with firearms and sharp weapons.
