Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo took part in a test where fishermen in Semarang were allowed to try out a solar powered boat.
'The solar powered boat is less noisy, economical, employs simple technology and is eco-friendly. However, the price of the machine is still expensive, around Rp 250 million (US$18,000) depending on the size of the boat,' said Ganjar as quoted by Antara news agency on Thursday.
The boat uses electric outboard motor Torqeedo made in Germany, which runs on batteries charged by solar panels installed on top of the boat.
'The solar panels will absorb the sun's rays and then store the energy in the batteries,' explained project manager and consultant Franklin Tambunan.
According to Franklin, such simple operations with the motor would ease the work of a fishermen when he operated the boat at sea.
'The solar cell, batteries and installation cable can hold up for about 25 years with almost zero maintenance as they are made of anti-corrosive aluminum,' Franklin added.
Ganjar said that his administration is ready to facilitate the usage of such technology in the province.
He also hoped that the government could lower the import tariff for such a machine.
'I hope the price [of the motor] could be lowered to make it affordable for fishermen, and it would be better if it could be produced locally ' especially since Germany as the producer is willing to partner with Indonesia,' said Ganjar. (rad/kes)(++++)
