The Jakarta City Council has recently set up a special committee to study the city administration's reclamation project in Jakarta Bay, North Jakarta. This project cannot be directly carried out without political approval from the City Council. Besides assessing the project's feasibility, the special committee will also discuss whether Jakarta Bay is part of the national strategic areas.
However, the City Council should bear in mind that behind the skyrocketing buildings and the concrete jungle, a great number of slum areas are still found the city. According to the city administration's database, 531 slum areas are still found in North Jakarta with 31,879 buildings accommodated by 42,000 families or 165,142 residents.
We have to give appreciation to Jakarta Governor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama who has planned to continue the reclamation project and the waterfront city project which have been discussed since 1995. The project is expected to be able to cope with the population explosion in the capital city. The project is really part of the city administration's development project to eliminate slums, including ones on riverbanks and near railways in the city. Residents' support for the project is a must or the city will otherwise become a freaky city for all.
We hope that the special committee chaired by legislator Selamat Nurdin will give a good contribution to the major project in the tireless efforts to make Jakarta a safe haven to live in for all residents and foreign tourists.
