he Jakarta city administration will target 600 alleged evaders of land and building (PBB) taxes with a total tax value of Rp 1.3 trillion (US$19.65 million), according to the head of the City Tax Service Agency, Bambang Setyowidodo.
'The 600 tax evaders will be summoned by the Jakarta Prosecutor's Office,' Bambang was quoted by beritajakarta.com as saying in Jakarta on Tuesday.
Bambang added that the 600 taxpayers are on the top of the list for those who owe the government the most for evading taxes; the total number of taxpayers who have not paid the PBB taxes, however, is 733,000.
Many Jakartans have complained about the city administration's tax increases.
The authority responsible for collecting the PBB tax is the city administration. It used to be the central government, but that changed in November 2012, when the city was allowed to collect land and building taxes for its own independent use instead of sharing tax revenue with the central government.
