Issue of the day: RI looks into reports of '€˜fake'€™ Syrians

The Indonesian government is probing in reports that its citizens were among the individuals posing as Syrian refugees traveling from Syria and the Middle East in order to gain access to the EU through the border of Greece and Macedonia.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Arrmanatha Nasir said on Monday that he would look into the reports that there were Indonesian migrants camping out on no-man'€™s land between Greece and Macedonia, pretending to be Syrians.

'€œI have to check the news first in order to get the gist of the story, then I will seek confirmation with our representatives there to see whether they are aware [of the matter] or not,'€ he told The Jakarta Post. '€œIf there'€™s a report [about that], then we will get it from our representatives but I haven'€™t checked yet.'€

When you welcome everyone then everyone who has the funds will be rushing to enjoy a better economic future. There is no lesser reason for Indonesians to join the human wave northward. Even the Islamic State (IS) movement might make the shift to claiming refugee status on the grounds of being in danger from US air strikes.

Many countries have enormous problems. The issue is (as more and more people flee to countries with better social and economic opportunities) the capacity of those advanced societies to cope with the migration wave. The last such migration ended the Roman Empire and ushered in the Dark Ages.

In contrast to the policy failure in Europe, Australia has developed highly effective policies to control migration so that people are easily absorbed. These policies in particular enable Australia to permanently resettle refugees from refugee camps.

Imagine they start rounding up people using blue and white flags as avatars in Jakarta.

It'€™s a craze: People who turn in blue and white flagging neighbors or friends get a new car! And then those people are crucified at the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle '€” one by one every day.

Imagine you somehow make it to, say, Australia, and are turned around on the next plane because you might just be there to enjoy the beaches.

Who knows? You can'€™t be careful enough these days. Next day your kid is on display at HI.

That'€™s pretty much what'€™s going on in Syria.
