he National Police's criminal investigation division on Thursday invited investigators from the general crimes divisions of all 33 provinces to take part in a workshop on the policing of election crimes that may occur during the regional elections on Dec. 9.
'Today [Thursday] we have gathered all deputy directors of general crime divisions at the provincial police headquarters to build on their ability to handle cases relating to the regional elections,' head of the general crime, politics and documentation directorate at the National Police headquarters Sr. Comr. Rudi Setiawan was quoted as saying by tribunnews.com.
Rudi said the police would oversee the regional elections to ensure the process was carried out democratically so that regions would have credible leaders.
'Apart from safeguarding the election process, we will also enforce the law. We are explaining to the investigators how to enforce the law soundly and responsibly,' Rudi added.
During the workshop, the participants were also reminded of the neutrality of the police in the regional elections.
The regional elections will see the election of 269 regional heads, including governors, mayors and regents. (bnn)
