nti-dolphin-hunt campaigner Ric O'Barry was being held in western Japan on Tuesday after being arrested the previous night for not carrying his passport.
The 75-year-old star of "The Cove," a 2009 Oscar-winning documentary about the Japanese dolphin hunt, was stopped while driving home from dinner at a restaurant, his son and fellow activist Lincoln O'Barry said by phone from Los Angeles.
Police said they received a tip that O'Barry might be driving under the influence of alcohol. He passed a breath test but was arrested after he could not produce his passport.
Japanese law requires that foreign visitors carry their passports or another acceptable form of ID.
O'Barry, an American, trained dolphins for the 1960s "Flipper" TV series, but had a change of heart and now campaigns against both capturing and killing them. He is in Japan to monitor and report on the annual hunt in Taiji, a city in western Japan.(++++)
