entral Statistics Agency (BPS) head Suryamin said consumer spending at the start of the new school year became one of the main contributors to August's inflation rate, which was recorded at 0.39 percent.
'The education, recreation and sports sector is a main spending group component that has contributed to the inflation rate in August as students of elementary and high schools have started their new year of studies,' he said as quoted by Antara in Jakarta on Tuesday.
According to BPS data, the education, recreation and sports sector contributed 1.72 percent to August's inflation.
Suryamin said the calendar year inflation from January to August 2015 stood at 2.29 percent while year-on-year inflation reached 7.18 percent.
He added that the core component inflation rate in August was recorded at 0.52 percent while year-on-year it stood at 4.92 percent.
The BPS data reveals that staple foods contributed 0.91 percent to inflation in August while processed foods, beverages, cigarettes and tobacco contributed 0.71 percent to the month's inflation. Health spending contributed 0.7 percent to inflation, followed by housing, tap water, electricity, gas and fuel (0.16 percent) and clothing (0.01 percent).
'Only transportation, communication and financial services suffered deflation in August, which reached 0.58 percent, due to a decline in air, land and sea transportation tariffs after the Idul Fitri festivity,' said Suryamin.
Of the total 82 consumer price index (IHK) cities, BPS recorded that 59 cities experienced inflation while 23 others suffered from deflation. The highest inflation rate was recorded in Tanjung Pandan, which reached 2.29 percent, while Kediri, Probolinggo and Sumenep recorded the lowest inflation rate, which stood at 0.02 percent. Meanwhile, the highest deflation occurred in Ambon, which stood at 1.77 percent. (ebf)
