T Sumber Alfaria Trijaya, the operator of minimarket chain Alfamart, has been trying to maintain the prices of its products amid the volatility of the rupiah and the economic slowdown.
The company, however, has also prepared strategic plans to offset any increase in production costs.
'The last resort will only be taken if our suppliers increase the prices of their products. If they do, there is no choice but for us to also increase our prices. Normally, the price increase is around 4 to 10 percent,' president director Hans Prawira said in a statement.
According to him, most of Alfamart's products are local but some use imported materials. 'Eventually, we will also be impacted by the weakening of the rupiah,' he added.
Hans acknowledged that increasing prices was not a good choice as it would be made amid people's weakening purchasing power. That would in turn slash the company's profits. As part of the company's efforts to cut spending, it will optimize the use of digital gadgets such as computer tablets, instead of paper, for its business transaction reports.
In addition, the company will increase its number of outlets in the Philippines from 60 at present to 100 outlets by the end of this year.
