The rupiah interbank rate strengthened four points on Thursday afternoon to Rp 14,128 per US dollar from Rp 14,132.
'The condition of regional financial markets varies, resulting in the limited strengthening of the rupiah. This is because sentiments sway between positive and negative,' Bank Himpunan Saudara forex market observer Rully Nova told Antara news agency.
Rully explained that positive sentiment over August's inflation rate was overshadowed by the possibility of the US Federal Reserve increasing its interest rate, which in turn affected the rupiah's value.
Meanwhile, Platon Niaga Berjangka analyst Lukman Leong said investors were still waiting for US data on non-farm sectors to be released on Friday.
In addition, Lukman said some investors were concerned about uncertainties caused by the slump in manufacturing data, making the Fed's plan to raise its rate unclear.
'Amid these uncertainties, the investors are less interested in currencies from developing countries due to the high risk,' he said.
The Bank Indonesia median rate showed that the rupiah weakened to Rp 14,160 from Rp 14,127 the previous day. (ika)
