'€œIt'€™s better late than never'€: Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (INDEF) economist Didik J.Rachbini says the government'€™s economic stimulus package should have been issued a year ago. (tempo.co)

Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (INDEF) economist Didik J. Rachbini has said the government must realize its commitments to infrastructure development to improve Indonesia'€™s economy, which has experienced continued slowed growth.

'€œInfrastructure development targets set by President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo'€™s administration, such as road, port and airport developments, are excellent. However, the government must ensure that its infrastructure development programs can be realized,'€ he told thejakartapost.com on Thursday.

On Wednesday, President Jokowi unveiled a new economic policy package, which was aimed at strengthening the national industry and developing micro, small and medium businesses while at the same time, inviting all stakeholders to jointly face the challenges of the global economic slowdown.

'€œIt is expected that the stimulus package can smooth out inter-region trade, bolster tourism and improve the well-being of fishermen by increasing fish production and saving fuel by 70 percent through a diesel-to-liquefied petroleum gas conversion program,'€ he said as quoted by Antara at the State Palace in Jakarta.

Jokowi said the first stage of the policy package, which was aimed at stimulating the national economy, was comprised of three steps. First, the government would push up the competitiveness of the national industry through deregulation, bureaucratic reform, law enforcement and the bolstering of business activities. Second, it would accelerate the national strategic project to remove obstacles and obstructions in project implementations and completions. Third, the government would increase investments in the property sector.

Didik said the economic stimulus package should have been applied a year ago.

To stimulate the national economy, Jokowi said the government was currently preparing 17 government regulations, 11 presidential decrees, two presidential instructions, 63 minister regulations and five other regulations.

'€œThe government will also simplify the permit issuance processes, improve work licensing procedures, strengthen synergy and use electronic-based services,'€ said Jokowi.

The President also conveyed his commitment to issue a second and third stimulus package to bolster the first. (ebf)
