PDI-P launches attack on Lino

n Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) lawmaker lodged a gratuity report on Tuesday against RJ Lino, the powerful executive of port operator PT Pelindo II, accusing him of giving gifts to State-Owned Enterprises Minister Rini Soemarno, who supervises Pelindo II.

PDI-P lawmaker Masinton Pasaribu of House Commission III overseeing the antigraft body submitted to the KPK official documents issued by Pelindo II that seemed to confirm that the company had spent Rp 200 million (US$ 13,706) to buy house furniture for Rini.

Masinton earlier pushed for the dismissal of Rini from the Cabinet, but failed because President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo decided to keep her in the job.

The House meanwhile has moved to establish a special committee, initiated by the PDI-P, to supervise the National Police'€™s handling of the graft investigation into top executives at Pelindo II, including Lino.

'€œThe giving of the gratuity allegedly took place on March 16, when Pelindo procured household furniture for the minister'€™s house. Such information is confirmed with these documents,'€ Masinton said while showing a folder of Pelindo II documents that he said he had obtained from '€œmembers of the public'€.

The list of items purchased included three sofas worth Rp 60 million, a table worth Rp 10 million, six chairs for a dining table worth Rp 3.5 million, one dining table worth 25 million and a set of office furniture for a room at her house worth Rp 59 million.

Lino has been criticized by some Pelindo II labor union members for his lavish spending on high ranking officials.

He made headlines in October 2014 when he reportedly spent hundreds of millions of rupiah to prepare a stage at the Pelindo II controlled Tanjung Priok port in Jakarta for Jokowi to announce his Cabinet after speculation was rife that he, Lino, was a prospective candidate for the post of state-owned enterprises minister.

Masinton said that one of Pelindo'€™s official letters confirmed that Lino had ordered the furniture purchases.

Acting KPK deputy chairman Indriyanto Seno Adji declined to comment on whether the KPK would launch an investigation following Masinton'€™s move.

On Tuesday, while Masinton met with KPK officials to submit the gratuity report, labor union members from the Jakarta International Container Terminal (JICT) staged a rally in front of KPK headquarters.

The protesters demanded that the KPK open an investigation into Lino over alleged corruption in his decision to extend the contract for Hong Kong-based company Hutchison Port Holding (HPH) to operate JICT, an affiliate of Pelindo II that handles container loading and unloading services for both export and import at Tanjung Priok port.

HPH'€™s concession to operate JICT '€” a joint venture between Pelindo II and HPH established in 1999 '€” was due to end in 2019 and the contract renewal has allegedly caused state losses.

'€œWe also see that the extension did not follow No. 17/2008 on shipping,'€ JICT union worker head Nova Sofyan.

In April 2014, the KPK grilled Lino for allegedly abusing his authority with regard to the purchase of three container cranes in 2010.

Pelindo II labor union head Kirnoto confirmed the incident and hoped the KPK would expand its investigation into other violations, including in the procurement of 10 mobile cranes worth Rp 45 billion for nine of Pelindo'€™s ports in 2012.

The Police recently launched an investigation into the procurement of the 10 mobile cranes. The Pelindo case turned political after National Police detective division chief Comr. Gen. Budi Waseso was removed from his position shortly after police raided Pelindo'€™s headquarters in North Jakarta on Aug. 28.
