The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) has reportedly nominated city councilor Boy Sadikin, son of legendary Jakarta governor, Ali Sadikin, as one of the party gubernatorial candidates to challenge incumbent Governor Basuki '€œAhok'€ Tjahaja Purnama in the 2017 gubernatorial race.

Two other party candidates are Jakarta Deputy Governor Djarot Syaiful Hidayat and City Council speaker Prasetio Edi Marsudi.

'€œPak Boy has the most support in the grassroots,'€ said spokesman of the PDI-P Jakarta chapter Stave Setiabudi Musa on Thursday as reported by tribunnews.com. Boy Sadikin is now chairman of the PDI-P Jakarta chapter.

He believed Boy would be among the strongest contenders in the Jakarta gubernatorial race and therefore he believed that the PDI-P national executive board would nominate the popular cadre of the party.

Stave compared the popularity of Boy Sadikin with Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo when the current president was nominated as the city governor.

Ali Sadikin, who was popularly known as Bang Ali, served as the governor of Jakarta, from 1966 to 1977. He was considered the most successful governor of the city. He was also considered controversial for allowing the operation of casinos and sex worker facilities.

There are three other people who have expressed interest or have been nominated to become Jakarta gubernatorial candidates. They are former youth and sports minister Adhyaksa Dault, deputy chairman of Gerindra Party'€™s Advisory Council Sandiaga Uno and Marco Kusumawijaya, an urban expert. (bbn) (++++)
