The city administration Marine Agriculture and Food Security Agency is considering creating a regulation on dog meat consumption, claiming that thousands of dogs were distributed to Jakarta to be consumed every day.
'There are around 40,000 dogs delivered to Jakarta every day. We are seriously considering the idea of regulating [the meat distribution], as Jakarta has been free from rabies since 2004,' Marine Agriculture and Food Security Agency head Darjamuni said on Monday as quoted by kompas.com.
According to him, most of the dogs came from Sukabumi in West Java, a city that is considered to have an endemic level of rabies. 'That is why we will have the meat checked,' he said.
