Greater Jakarta: Residents protest field development

J

AKARTA: A group of residents at the Customs and Excise Agency housing complex in Cilincing, North Jakarta, staged a protest on Friday against plans to develop a field, which they claimed to be a community facility, into office buildings.

According to a report on wartakota.tribunnews.com, dozens of people tried to stop workers unloading building materials from a truck onto the field despite the presence of police officers guarding the area.

'€œThis is a fasos-fasum [social and public facility] that belongs to residents. Who gave you a permit to unload the materials? Take it back!'€ 40-year-old resident Zaidar yelled at the workers. Zaidar said that the field was a play area for children.

Separately, Cilincing district head Nana Hendriyana confirmed that the land would be used for office buildings. '€œI forget the developer but the 2,000-square meter land plot will become office buildings,'€ he said, as quoted by wartakota.tribunnews.com.

According to Nana, the plan had been discussed with the residents and most of them agreed with it. '€œOnly few people expressed their objections. We also have discussed the matter at the North Jakarta Police office,'€ he said.

Nana said the One-Stop Integrated Services Agency (BPTSP) had issued a construction permit.
