Jakarta Governor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama has threatened to replace the directors of city-owned busway operator PT Transportasi Jakarta (Transjakarta) if they fail to provide better buses by the end of this year.
The governor is unhappy with the poor condition of buses operated, particularly along Corridor VI, running between Dukuh Atas in Central Jakarta and Ragunan in South Jakarta.
'We will see at the end of this year because some new buses have not arrived yet, and the shelters have not been handed over [to Transjakarta]. But, if by the end of the year the problem is not solved, we may replace [the directors],' Ahok said at City Hall on Tuesday.
Ahok said he had also instructed the management of Transjakarta, under the leadership of Antonius S Kosasih, to pay serious attention to the poor condition of buses operated along other corridors.
According to Ahok, the company has to be able to control the maintenance of buses to deliver a better Transjakarta services. 'We have employed the current management of Transjakarta to do this job. If they can't, they should be replaced,' he added.
The operation of old buses as well as poorly maintained buses along assorted Transjakarta corridors has sparked concern among public transportation users because many buses have caught fire during operation. (edn/bbn)(++++)
