The police have said that the number of Aceh Singkil residents, who are feeling to North Sumatra has reached 4,409 on Wednesday, following an attack by an Islamic group to a village in the regency on Tuesday. One church was burned down during the incident.
Previously, head of North Sumatra National Unity and Community Protection Agency (Kesbanglinmas) Eddy Sofyan said that the number of the people was only 2,500.
North Sumatra Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Helfi Assegaf said on Thursday that 3,433 Aceh Singkil people arrived in Central Tapanuli regency and 976 others arrived in Pakpak Bharat regency on Wednesday.
Helfi further explained that the Aceh Singkil residents fled because they were informed that they were being chased. "They ran to different directions to Central Tapanuli and Pakpak Bharat, because they were scared," Helfi said.
In Central Tapanuli, the people were sheltered at five locations in Manduamas district at HKI Church, Saragih Village Community Meeting Centre, SMP 1 Atap Saragih, HKBP Saragih Church and Tumba Jahe Parish Catholic.
The police are still working on the details of the Aceh Singkil people in Central Tapanuli to know the exact number of the adults and the children, according to Helfi.
Under the coordination of Manduamas District head Sehat Dalimunthe, the local government has prepared the daily needs for the refugees like rice, instant noodles, eggs, cooking oil, mineral water, fishes, tents, kitchen utensils, etc.
Meanwhile, 976 Aceh Singkil people in Pakpak Bharat were sheltered at Sibagindar Regency office, school, houses of Pakpak Bharat's residents and tents. Local government had also prepared logistics for them.
Dozens of personnel from the Mobile Brigade (Brimob) and local military have been deployed along the border of North Sumatra and Aceh Singkil border, Antara news Agency reported.
