A representative of copper and gold miner Freeport was among the attendants of a meeting between President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo and the US Chamber of Commerce (UCC) in Washington DC on Monday.
When asked after the meeting if Freeport was represented, Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) head Franky Sibarani said, "Yes. The participants were all invited by the UCC, which included parties with investments in Indonesia and those interested [in investing]," as quoted by Antara news agency. He added that the meeting had been initiated by the UCC.
According to Franky, 90 percent of US investment in Indonesia is currently in the mining sector, with the other 10 percent in the industry and plantation sectors. Thus, he said, Freeport's attendance at the meeting was reasonable.
He also said that the government planned to boost investment in the energy sector, including manufacturing.
"We will also increase US investment in the creative economy sector, including the film industry's development that is still closed to foreign investment," said Franky.
US investment growth in Indonesia, according to Franky, was at 23 percent per year providing a 6 percent contribution to foreign direct investment. Meanwhile, total US investment over the last 5.5 years is US$8 billion ' the third largest total after Singapore and Japan. (mas/kes)(+)
