Your comments on the suggestion by experts that Indonesia should be cautious in joining the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal:

The TPP will liberalize the financial services industry more deeply than what we committed to in the ASEAN Economic Community. Local banks and other financial services should consolidate to maintain their competitiveness.

In terms of financial stability, it is important to maintain our policy space for authorities to regulate financial markets. Based on the 1998 and 2008 financial crises, we learned that capital flow management is a strategic and important issue that has to be handled carefully. Removing all kinds of state intervention, such as free trade negotiations envision, could lead to unregulated financial markets that could in turn create uncontrolled volatility.

Joining the TPP may make it difficult for Indonesia to compete with other countries that have joined the US-led agreement. Indonesia needs to maximize its strength in food sovereignty by developing high technology in the agricultural sector.

I am not a law or economics expert. I'€™m just a retired Air Force pilot. But if Indonesia wants to join the TPP, it must be prepared to beat the competition in the Trans-Pacific ring. The President should consider its membership in the new trade area and should have a hand in what products Indonesia will offer to win the competition.

E. Nurdin

The benefits outweigh the costs. Indonesia, as the largest and most populous country in ASEAN, will be able to enhance bilateral ties with US, the biggest trading partner in the region.

Despite the opinion of some, Indonesia join the TPP to improve its trading relationship with other member countries.

Do you honestly think that Indonesia has the discipline to accept the proposed market access conditions for the TPP?

I am not sure that Indonesia is ready to join the TPP because our industry is not strong enough to compete with the major industries of other developed countries such as Japan or Canada.

Golkar joins the government

After a recent decision from the Supreme Court to terminate the one-year internal conflict in the Golkar Party, the two conflicting sides held a national reconciliation meeting and decided to support President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo'€™s government. Golkar and the National Mandate Party (PAN), which earlier declared its support for the government, will likely receive ministerial seats in an upcoming Cabinet reshuffle. What do you think?
