Traditional Minangkabau villages in Jorong Koto Padang Ranah and Jorong Tanah Bato in Nagari Sijunjung, Sijunjung regency, West Sumatra, have been proposed to the Education and Culture Ministry to be declared national heritage sites
raditional Minangkabau villages in Jorong Koto Padang Ranah and Jorong Tanah Bato in Nagari Sijunjung, Sijunjung regency, West Sumatra, have been proposed to the Education and Culture Ministry to be declared national heritage sites.
Padang Cultural Value Conservation Center (BPNB) head Nurmatias said the two villages had earlier been proposed for inclusion in UNESCO's world heritage tentative list.
'But it turned out that both had to be declared as national heritage sites first,' Nurmatias said.
He said two prominent features of the villages were their original traditional buildings and cultural activities, which included arts, customs, local food sources and conservation forests.
'Being a national and world heritage site will preserve the remaining Minangkabau traditional culture,' Nurmatias said.
