President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo named five freedom fighters national heroes in a ceremony at the Presidential Palace on Thursday in Jakarta.
The five figures were the late Bernard Wilhem Lapian, the late Ki Bagus Hadikusumo, the late Mas Isman, the late Moehammad Jasin and the late I Gusti Ngurah Made Agung for their efforts in helping Indonesia attain independence.
Kompas.com reported that their recognition as heroes was made official in Presidential Decree No. 116/2015.
Bernard Wilhem Lapian was involved in the Merah Putih (Red White) event of Feb. 14, 1946 in which he led an army of young men with Lt. Col. CH Taulu and Second Sgt. SD Wuisan to invade a Dutch army base in Telling, Manado. BW Lapian ripped the blue section off the Dutch flag and raised the remaining red and white that became Indonesia's own.
Ki Bagus Handikusumo was the vice chairman of the Muhammadiyah organization in 1937, during which he was also a member of the Investigatory Agency for the Preparatory Work for Indonesian Independence (BPUPKI) and Indonesian Independence Preparation Committee (PPKI). He also played a major role in the formulation of the Preamble of the 1945 Constitution.
Mas Isman believed that even students must fight against colonization and led an organization of armed students. He was also a founder of Kosgoro, which eventually became one of the community organizations that founded the original Golkar Party.
Moehammad Jasin was a freedom fighter who proclaimed the special police as the police of Indonesia. He attended the formation of the Mobile Brigade in 1946 in Purwokerto and later became the head of the East Java Mobile Brigade.
I Gusti Ngurah Made Agung was King Badung VII. He continually opposed Dutch colonization through literary work. He also rejected the Kuta agreement previously made by the king of Bali with the colonial Dutch government.
The honor plaques and awards were handed over by the President to the heirs of the recipients. The honor plaque for BW Lapian was received by Louisa Magdalena Gandhy Lapian, the plaque for Mas Isman accepted by Hayono Isman, for M Jasin by Rubyanti Jasin, for I Gusti Ngurah Made Agung by Anak Agung Ngurah Oka Ratmadi and the plaque for Ki Bagus Hadikusumo was accepted by Hatief Hadikusumo.
