Narcotics kill between 40 and 45 people every day, according to National Police chief Comr. Gen. Badrodin Haiti.
"Besides radicalism, the biggest threat in our country is the drug abuse that has poisoned younger generations," he said on Friday as quoted by Antara news agency.
According to Badrodin, the number of drug abusers in the country has reached 4.1 million people, around 2.2 percent of the total population.
He also said that the financial cost of drug abuse in Indonesia was around Rp 60 trillion per year (US$4.43 billion).
"That amount includes expenses for rehabilitation programs for drug abusers, medication and the purchase of various drugs used by the addicts," added Badrodin. (kes)(+)
