OGYAKARTA: A Batik Air plane from Jakarta slid off the runway at Adisucipto International Airport of Yogyakarta on Friday. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
'There were no casualties or injuries. Everyone is safe. Only some passengers were shocked,'Adisutjipto Air Force Base commander First Marshal Imran Baidirus said as quoted by Antara news agency, adding that all the passengers had been evacuated following the incident.
Imran explained that the incident occurred as the plane was attempting to land during a downpour at about 3 p.m. 'When the plane landed, it experienced overshoot and skid off the runaway,' he said. According to Imran, the aircraft's front tires were damaged after sinking a meter into the rain-soaked soil at the end of the runway.
Andy M. Saladin, public relations manager for Lion Air Group, the holding company of Batik Air, stated that the plane, carrying pilot Oscar Mirza with copilot Dana Aviantara, five cabin crew and 160 passengers, was still in the evacuation process at the airport.
