AKARTA: Jakarta Governor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama has brushed off claims from fishermen in Muara Angke in North Jakarta that a decline in the fish population in Jakarta Bay is due to white mud generated by artificial island reclamation activities in the bay, suggesting instead that the drop is down to pollution from Jakarta's rivers.
'Are fish numbers falling because of the reclamation, or rather because of pollution from the 13 rivers in Jakarta?' he asked reporters at City Hall on Thursday, as quoted by tempo.co.
In the past, he said, Jakartans could fish in the Ciliwung River.
'In my grandparents' time, people just fished in the Ciliwung River to get fish,' he said. 'Now it's fruitless to fish even on the seashore. Why? Because of the pollution from the 13 rivers.'
He also blamed illegal fishing by foreign fishermen in Indonesian waters for the lower hauls.
'All fishermen in Indonesia are experiencing decreasing catches today because of illegal fishing,' he claimed.
