he Riau Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) is to relocate three baby Sumatran orangutans, victims of a wildlife trade syndicate, to the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Program (SOCP) in North Sumatra.
'We've decided to relocate them because the baby orangutans are less than a year old, so they require special treatment,' Riau BKSDA Protection Section head Rinaldo told Antara news agency in Pekanbaru on Sunday.
The newborn orangutans were rescued Riau Police detectives during a Nov. 7 raid on members of a wildlife trade syndicate.
The newborn pongo abelii primates, native to the forests of Aceh, would have fetched Rp 25 million (about US$1,800) each in Pekanbaru.
According to Rinaldo, the decision to relocate the apes was taken because the SOCP has greater experience dealing with young orangutans.
SOCP program manager Asril Abdullah said the three young orangutans would be transported by road from Pekanbaru to a quarantine center in Batu Mbelin village, Sibolangit district, Deli Serdang regency, North Sumatra.
