State-owned oil and gas company PT Pertamina will distribute 16.39 million kiloliters of subsidized fuel next year, comprising 15.7 million kiloliters of diesel and 688,000 kiloliters of kerosene.
Pertamina will also distribute 13 million kiloliters of Premium fuel to areas outside Java, Madura and Bali.
Pertamina marketing director Ahmad Bambang said the amount of Premium to be distributed outside Java, Madura and Bali next year had decreased compared to this year's amount.
'The volume has decreased due to the rise in consumption of Pertamax and Pertalite. The distribution of Premium gasoline in non-Java, Madura and Bali areas is expected to drop to 13 million kiloliters from the previous 14.8 million kiloliters,' said Bambang in Jakarta on Monday.
He said the decline in Premium consumption was caused by several things, one of which was Indonesia's economic slowdown that had led to increased use of public transport. Another factor was that many middle-income people had chosen to use Pertamax, increasing its consumption by four times compared to last year. The launch in July of a new type of fuel, Pertalite, reduced Premium consumption by 12 percent.
'The consumption of Pertalite now reaches 4 million liters per day. Meanwhile, the use of Pertamax has reached 8 million liters per day, up from only 2.5 million liters per day last year. The Premium consumption, which reached 80 million liters a day last year, is now only 65 million liters a day,' Bambang said.
On the same occasion, Downstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Agency (BPH Migas) chief Andy N. Sommeng said fuel distributor PT Aneka Kimia Raya (AKR) Corporindo would also distribute 300 thousand kiloliters of subsidized diesel next year.
Andy added that in accordance with Law No. 22/2001 on oil and gas, BPH Migas would control the availability and guarantee the distribution of fuel to all areas of Indonesia. It would also strive to increase the use of natural gas.
'With these two functions, BPH Migas has three roles, namely as a regulatory body, supervisory body and dispute resolution body,' Andy said. He added that the agency would ensure fuel shortages would not happen again in Indonesia. (ebf)
