Comments on other issues: Your letters: Circumcision'€™s benefits

In addition to preventing HIV/AIDS, circumcision'€™s other benefits include the prevention of prostate cancer. Research at the University of Quebec'€™s INRS-Institut Armand-Frappier in Montreal, Canada, says that circumcision reduces the risk of infection of sexually transmitted diseases that are one of the causes of prostate cancer.

It also helps prevent kidney and bladder infections. Research conducted by Brian Morris, a professor of molecular medicine from Sydney Medical School, the University of Sydney, noted that boys who were not circumcised were 10 times more likely to experience infections of the kidney, bladder and urethra than boys who were circumcised.

They believe that God'€™s creation should not be changed. If the body cannot be altered in any way, then how are doctors who perform surgery supposed to cure their patients? It is same case with circumcision; circumcision is done for the sake of health and does not intend to change God'€™s creation. (By Mustika Diyah Saputri)

Your comments:

For clarification to anyone reading this who is not sure whether this article, and similar ones from Indonesian writers, are biased on the topic of circumcision and other body alterations of minors, the vast majority of people (women included) in Indonesia are in favor of female genital mutilation (FGM), and most women have undergone it.

Even if the said writer is in favor of male circumcision but not female, a culture so lax on the issue of body modification of children is sure to manifest itself in some way within the opinions of people from that culture.

Just let everyone choose what cosmetic changes are done to them. Is that really so strange a concept?

The fact that Mustika Diyah Saputri takes an interest in this subject matter is a good thing.

The last paragraph, however, indicates that Mustika needs to visit one of the Indonesian Planned Parenthood Association (PKBI) offices in Jakarta or wherever she lives and talk to the staff there.

Maybe money should not be a problem. But the impact of condoms will damage the environment.

Risna Octaviani Cheisye

If everybody on earth had sex using condoms 10 times a day (or more), then yes, used condoms could damage the environment. Meanwhile, styrofoam lunch boxes, instant noodle cups, plastic cups from over-priced coffee shops and shopping bags from supermarkets pollute the earth a lot more than condoms.

Do you always reuse the cup after you finish eating instant noodles? Do you always wash the styrofoam boxes and use them again for food after enjoying your delicious takeaway meal?

What do you do with the plastic cups after you drink that sweet frappe from Starbucks?

By the way, condoms made from latex and lambskin are biodegradable. Something you should know before blaming condoms for polluting the earth.

Circumcision is male genital mutilation. We don'€™t give newborn girls double mastectomies to prevent breast cancer.

A child has a right to remain intact '€” period. This barbaric practice needs to end.
