House of Representatives Commission III overseeing law, human rights and security is moving forward with the selection of Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) leaders after agreeing to conduct a report verification within the week, a commission chairman said on Monday evening.

"With the factions' coordination, the plenary meeting decided to continue [the process] with some considerations and notes," Commission III chairman Azis Syamsuddin said after the meeting on Monday night.

The names of the eight KPK leaders candidates will be announced later this week, both in printed and electronic media. From now until Friday, the commission will make a report and make verifications.

Screening of candidates will take place from Dec. 14 to 16.

"It was decided in the plenary session that screening of the KPK leaders candidates will proceed. Based on the schedule, we will have new KPK leaders on Dec. 16 evening," Commission III deputy chairman Benny Kabur Harman said.

The current KPK leadership consists of three temporary leaders, namely acting KPK chairman Taufiequrachman Ruki, acting KPK deputy chairman Johan Budi SP and KPK deputy chairman Indriyanto Seno Adji. Indriyanto replaced Busyro Muqoddas, former KPK deputy chairman whose term ended last year.

Taufiequrachman, Johan and Indriyanto leadership will remain in their positions until new leaders are appointed on Dec. 16. The terms of two KPK commissioners, Zulkarnain and Adnan Pandu Praja, also end on the same day.

"It isn't connected at all. What matters is [we all] agree," Commission III deputy chairman Desmond Junaidi Mahesa responded when asked about the screening being held so close to the end of term of the KPK leadership.

Azis said it was possible that new KPK leaders would be elected at any time during the three days of screening.

He declined to explain the considerations of the tight timeline, citing the closed plenary meeting mechanism as the reason.

The exclusion of a prosecutor's office representative among the eight commissioner candidates by the screening committee will be taken into consideration, Benny said.

The antigraft body leadership has always had a prosecutor's office representative. Tumpak Hatorangan Panggabean, one of the KPK's first leaders, was a deputy prosecutor. Antasari Azhar, who was appointed in 2007, had a long-term career in the prosecutor's office. Current KPK commissioner Zulkarnaen is also a prosecutor's office representative.

The eight KPK leader candidates are Saut Situmorang and Surya Chandra (prevention division); Alexander Marwata and Basaria Panjaitan (law enforcement division); Agus Raharjo and Sujanarko (management division) and Johan Budi Sapto Prabowo and Laode Muhammad Syarif (supervision division). Besides the eight candidates, two other KPK leader candidates, Busyro Muqoddas and Roby Arya Bharata, were selected earlier.

The plenary meeting was attended by 37 of 52 Commission III members. Initially, the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) and the Gerindra Party wanted the session open to the public. (dan)(+)
