The Thursday Noise concert series returns this Thursday with performances by rock bands Kelompok Penerbang Roket, Fuzzy, I, Heals and DJ Reno Nismara from Rolling Stone Indonesia.

Conceptualized by Jakarta-based rockers Morfem — which always plays the show — the Thursday Noise series has run for almost two years, and is now on its seventh edition. The show is being officially billed as Thursday Noise 7: World of Noise.

Having usually taken place at the Borneo Beerhouse in the past, the latest edition will instead be held at Kemang's Ecobar 365 in South Jakarta. This change of place won't affect the show's consistent free-entry policy.

Having worked, in the past, with local illustrators to create its show posters, this edition of Thursday Noise takes things further with a poster competition that had garnered almost 100 entries and two finalists at press time.

The winner will be based on votes and will take home a cash prize of Rp 5 million (US$360) — a significantly large prize for these types of independent contests. The entry posters themselves have been of high quality, with a variety of styles reminiscent of everything from ‘90s underground US concert posters to Manga-style bizarreness.

Morfem themselves are one of Jakarta's most popular indie-rock bands —that is, a band that mixes simple melodic flourishes with noisier rock elements: loud guitars, loud drums, loud bass and attitude-laden vocals.

The band has released two full-length records and a slew of EPs, singles and compilation singles. They have most actively collaborated with shoe brand Converse, spawning an EP titled SneakerFuzz.

The band started off as a side project by vocalist Jimi Multhazam, a popular figure in the independent world who made his name leading the still-active new-wave band The Upstairs, whose flashy color scheme and post-irony disco music was, no exaggeration, one of the leading trends in the early to mid-2000s.

Kelompok Penerbang Roket is one of the city's most exciting rising new acts. Having won a series of music competitions, the band has garnered a large fan base through sub-chaotic live shows (where tantrums and mild instrument destruction are a common sight) and garage-rock-throwback music — the kind that forms a perfect soundtrack for pre-to-post adolescent angst — like a slimier version of late ‘90s nu metal.

Its moniker means Rocket-Piloting Group, and it's not hard to feel that sense of high flying and crowd-pleasing when they are on stage.

Heavily indebted to the original “grunge” sounds of West Coast bands such as Nirvana, Melvins, Mudhoney, Gruntruck and especially Tad, Jakarta noise rockers Fuzzy, I takes Kelompok Penerbang Roket's pseudo chaos and infuses it with extra fuzziness and winter flannel.

The band’s youth keeps the songs warm with obvious excitement and infectious energy even as the songs still feel like they are taking shape. Another mosh-pi maker, Fuzzy, I seems more than fitting for the show's theme.

Bandung band Heals is riding high on a signing with respected independent label Fastforward Records (the label's first signing in over 10 years).

Though there is no official word yet on a release date of any kind, the band is sharpening its stage act with constant shows around Jakarta and Bandung.

Their sound is on the tamer yet still noise-laden side of melodic rock, with more sound effect punch and a mild psychedelic feel.

Thursday Noise 7: World of Noise should satisfy the rock thirst of the city's increasing fuzz rock fan base. If anything, it is a good summary of the kinds of modern rock music emerging from the city.

'€œThese are bands which in the future will have the capability to blow up and become huge,'€ says Jimi.
