Bandung Mayor Ridwan "Emil" Kamil and businessman Sandiaga Uno are among eight people nominated by the Gerindra Party to challenge incumbent Jakarta Governor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama in the 2017 gubernatorial election.
Their names were announced at a gathering of 750 Gerindra cadres in Jakarta on Monday to nominate potential candidates who are given opportunity to compete for the party's ticket in the election.
The six other nominees are former deputy defense minister Sjafrie Syamsuddin, Jakarta city secretary Saefullah, Gerindra secretary-general Ahmad Muzani, Gerindra lawmaker Biem Banjamin and two Gerindra city councilors ' Mohamad Sanusi and M Taufik.
According to Syarif, a party politician from Jakarta, the choice of the possible candidates was based on grass root aspirations in the capital. 'From the survey, we get these eight figures,' Syarif said, adding that in January the party would reduce the number of nominees to five.
He said the five figures were expected to compete to win the hearts of Jakarta citizens until June, before the party would further reduce the field of gubernatorial nominees to three potential candidates.
Syarif said Gerindra chairman Prabowo Subianto would have the final say on who would represent the party in the gubernatorial race.
Sandiaga Uno, who is also deputy chairman of the Gerindra's Advisory Board, is getting ready to rally support for his candidacy.
Anggawira, coordinator of Friends of Sandiaga Uno, a group backing his bid, praised Gerindra's system to recruit the Jakarta gubernatorial candidate. Anggawira said his team was ready to boost support for Sandiaga.
'The system gives [Jakarta's voters] choices. [Sandiaga] is ready to meet the grassroots and prepare his program as well as to follow the process [of the nomination],' said Syarif as reported by kompas.com. (bbn)
