overnor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama has said he is open to endorsement from the NasDem Party for the 2017 gubernatorial election.
Ahok said he had a positive relationship not only with NasDem but also the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) and was thus open to cooperating with the two parties in the election.
'Yes [I'm open to endorsements]. I've always been on good terms with the NasDem as well as the PDI-P,' Ahok told reporters after an assembly at the National Monument (Monas) in Central Jakarta on Monday.
Previously, NasDem Party chairman Surya Paloh said the party would prioritize supporting Ahok in the upcoming gubernatorial election. Surya said that Ahok was well seasoned and understood the problems of Jakarta.
Supporters of the governor, grouped in a community called Friends of Ahok (Teman Ahok), have been collecting signatures from ID cardholders for the governor to run independently in the 2017 election. As of Monday, they claimed to have collected 609,434 signatures from the targeted 1 million.
