State-owned electricity company PLN has sped up the realization of a 35,000-megawatt (MW) power plant project, and eyes a 4x25 MW power plant in Gorontalo to be the first project to fully operate next month.

The power plant, located in Northern Sulawesi, began construction in September 2015 and was previously targeted to be finished in six months. It would be a breakthrough if PLN could finish it earlier, said PLN director for corporate planning Nicke Widyawati.

"From the total capacity of 100 MW, consisting of four units, two of the generators at the Gorontalo power plant are in operation now," Nicke said in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, PLN business director for Sulawesi and Nusa Tenggara, Machnizon Masri, said the company had prioritized the first two-engine generator units to supply power for Gorontalo. The other two units, each with a capacity of 25 MW, were expected to run in February 2016.

"Supported by the hard work of all the teams in the field, I am optimistic the two engines will soon be operational in February, which means they will add up to 100 MW of power supply for the community," he added.

PLN is expected to sign up to 37 power purchase agreements (PPA) this year to provide 15,535 MW this year, as part of the 35,000-MW program that is slated to be completed by 2019. (ags)(+)
