C

overed wickets, effective drainage and resilient men in whites all came together to produce yet another weekend of competitive cricket in the TATA motors JCA League, which saw victories for KLN WISCI, the Fez Rebels and TKCC.

On a newly laid mat at the Cibubur ground on Sunday, defending champions KLN WISCI annihilated Emerio CC in a Division 1 fixture.

Batting first, EmerioCC kept losing wickets at regular intervals, and all out for a mere 73 runs in the 21st over. Rajneesh Vasudeva was the wrecker-in-chief, scalping four wickets for just 13 runs. Aman Singh and Deepak Singh chipped in with 2/14 and 2/16 respectively.

WISCI then got off to a start unfamiliar to them when they lost their top two batsmen without a run on the board. Viraj Bhammar and Rajeev Rajeswaran, both of whom feature in the top-five batsmen in the league this season, were both back in the pavilion without hurting the scorers.

Skipper William Noronha (42*) and Bob Plath (15*) then ensured there was no further drama as they knocked off the required runs in the 10th over in an unfinished partnership of 74 runs. For Emerio, David, who provided the early breakthrough, was the lone wicket taker, claiming both wickets and conceding just nine runs.

In a Division 2 fixture at the GMIS grounds, the Fez Rebels defeated MavecricsCC by three wickets in a gripping encounter.

Batting first, MavecricsCC started well but a sudden collapse of five wickets saw them struggling at 51/5. Pradeep Patnaik, batting cautiously, then found support in the form of Sanjeev Modi (28 runs) to stabilize the innings.

At the fall of his partner'€™s wicket, Pradeep, realizing he was running out of partners, decided to throw caution to the winds, and in quick succession smashed four sixes and four boundaries.

However the introduction of Corbon Loughnan into the bowling attack put paid to all his efforts when Corbon knocked off the last three wickets in one over without conceding a single run. Mavecrics were all-out for 150 runs, with Pradeep stranded on 58 runs. Greg Furness took 2/19.

In response, the Rebels were coasting along at 86/1 when Martin Eddy missed a straight ball to be dismissed for 26 runs. A quick cameo by Cameron Knox (19 runs off 11 balls) notwithstanding, the Rebels suffered a collapse, losing 4 wickets for 6 runs. At 115/6, it looked like the Mavecrics were back in the game; but Corbon, who was batting at the other end, had other ideas.

While remaining unbeaten on a well-made 74 runs, the all-rounder landed one ball on the terrace to seal victory by three wickets, and with it the Man of the Match award. Mayank and Pradeep took three and two wickets, respectively.

In another Division 1 game at Purwakarta, TKCC defeated the Jakarta Barbarians by nine wickets. Batting first, the Barbarians were all out for a mere 60 runs. Ben Burgess scored 19 runs. Nagesh Gawda took 4/20 while Maneesh Tripathi took three wickets, conceding just one run.

In response, lead by Rakesh AS'€™ unbeaten 39 runs, TKCC overhauled the target in nine overs, losing a solitary wicket.

Earlier on Saturday at Cibubur, to celebrate the spirit of cricket that exists between two of the largest expatriate communities in Jakarta, the Kangaroo Curry cup was played between an Australia XI and an India XI.

Consisting of the best of talent available from these two cricketing giants in the capital, the eighth edition of the annual T20 game was won by India XI, thereby going 5-3 up, head to head. In a game that had the usual drama associated with a T20 encounter, India XI reached 141/3 in the 19th over to win by seven wickets, chasing a target of 140 set by Australia XI.
