Issue of the day: Deradicalization approach '€˜unsuccessful'€™

Sidney Jones - JP/Berto Wedhatama

Jan. 23, 2016

The term '€œderadicalization'€ has been frequently heard since the Bali bombing in 2002, when authorities started working with imprisoned members of militant groups in the hope they would turn away from their radical thinking. It was a method of combating terrorism without using brute force. Following the Jan. 14 terrorist attacks in Jakarta, in which one of the dead terrorists has been identified as Afif, aka Sunakim, a former terrorist convict, many have questioned the effectiveness of deradicalization.

Institute for Policy Analysis of Conflict (IPAC) director Sidney Jones said the programs conducted by the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) had not been successful in countering radicalism.

Your comments:

Deradicalization is a hard question to answer; maybe there are some things that can be done that won'€™t hurt.

Here is a good one. Find out how much prison time the Marines got for shooting mothers and their children in bedrooms in Haditha.

I would google junkyard papers in Haditha for a start. You may also want to compare this to the 88 years prison time that Aafia Siddiqui received even though he killed no one.

Apparently, rape and torture is part of her sentence.

What happened to the Marines who tortured to death a suspect in Abu Ghraib prison? Google Manadel al-Jamadi. The photo of them with their trophy is not very nice.

If Muslims start to have faith in Western justice, they will not seek justice themselves.

What happened to the US as a result of the Iranian passenger plane they shot down? What tampering of evidence did the US do to implicate Iran in the Lockerbie bombing? How rich is the key witness now? Who can trust anything that the West has to say.

You may want to see the effects of depleted uranium on the children of Iraq. Google '€œHotter than hell DU'€ to find out if the US already knew the effects of DU when they decided to use it.

Have the leaders involved been arrested yet? Arrest the Bush administration for war crimes; that would help greatly.

Stop drones blowing up Muslim families in Pakistan, Yemen, Afghanistan and Somalia. Nothing raises more anger than having your wedding guests blown up during the reception. Do you think the survivors will get up, link hands and sing kumbaya. They will be after revenge.

How about an island surrounded by crocodiles and piranhas?

Wasn'€™t it Muslim teachers that radicalized them to begin with? The programs are expensive, but there are not enough resources for them. If they don'€™t work, it is a waste of resources.

The thing here is, you won'€™t change them. You need to better control the prison population. It is a prison, not a social gathering.

Treat it as such. If someone spreads evil, they should be talking to themselves in solitary confinement. If guards are helping them out, put them on the inside, too. It may be time to better enforce the search procedures and which visitors are let in.

De-radicalization has limited effect. Most so-called terrorists will fall back to their belief. A life sentence will then be more effective.

Why? Because Indonesia is viewed as not being safe, meaning no wallet full of foreign investment. Overseas companies have this thing called insurance for employees, because they care about them, and Indonesia could easily become a non-go state in terms of insurance.

We have seen with the Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) government too much siding with radicals. This new government does show it cares. I'€™m surprised how everyone has let SBY off the hook. He should stand trial.

Who are we kidding here? Indonesia is in the middle of radicalization. Almost everything that has happened recently is leading to more radicalization, not less.

Indonesia has only one problem regarding radicals: It has a short-term memory. Radical Islam and its supporter (such as the Islam Defenders Front, if you believe mainstream opinion) may be temporarily discredited by the terror attack at Sarinah. But give it a year or so and they would come back stronger.

Let'€™s see. Making them stand in the corner didn'€™t work. Taking away their toys didn'€™t do much. Not even a spanking seemed to work. Oh, what can we do?
