The government is discussing the best ways to help members of the Fajar Nusantara Movement (Gafatar), which has been declared heretical by the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), return back to normal society, a minister has said.

'€œWe want them to live normally, return to society,'€ Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung said as quoted by kompas.com at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday.

President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo will soon hold a meeting with relevant ministers to discuss the impacts of the relocation of Gafatar members. The meeting is scheduled to be held in the middle of February.

Your comments:

Is the government now controlled by the MUI? We are tired of their fatwa. Take away any power the MUI has. There should be no more political Islam.

The thing is, if they do not identify themselves as Muslim, then how can they possibly come under the jurisdiction of the MUI?

To me, Gafatar sounds a bit like Bahais.

Devanagari

They were peaceful, law abiding, citizens before the MUI edict. Who is the one that needs retraining because they are bad for Islam? That would be the MUI and everyone who thinks they are right. They can say what they want concerning Muslims, but evidently, these people decided not to be Muslim. Now they are being forced to take it back up again, that is criminal.

So why aren'€™t MUI leaders being arrested for inciting violence and civil unrest? They obviously knew that violence would occur. The Gafatar members don'€™t need to be rehabilitated and should be left in peace.

Notsurewhy

'€œReturn them to normal society?'€ Isn'€™t this where they were when they were attacked, their homes were burned down and their children were terrified?
