lawyer of Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) investigator Novel Baswedan has expressed doubt that an assault case involving the senior detective will end soon.
Muji Kartika Rahayu said that the case, in which Novel is accused of shooting suspects of a crime case when he was still a police officer in Bengkulu, was too politically charged and would be made a pawn to trade with other cases in the Attorney General's Office (AGO).
The AGO recently withdrew Novel's case from the Bengkulu District Court in line with President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo's orders, but it has yet to drop the case entirely.
'There may be more bargains on the case [in the AGO], whether it is taken before a court once again or terminated,' she said over the weekend, as quoted by tribunnews.com.
Muji reminded the AGO that Jokowi had requested that the case, along with cases involving former KPK chairmen Abraham Samad and Bambang Widjojanto, be dropped for good if there was not sufficient evidence.
The police have rejuvenated investigations into the cases involving the KPK official and former leaders after the antigraft body, under the leadership of Abraham, named Comr. Budi Gunawan a bribery suspect.
Budi's charges were later dropped through a historical pretrial mechanism last year.
