Your letters: Clarification from Thai Embassy

ith reference to the cartoon published on page 7 of The Jakarta Post on May 25, regarding Thailand, I wish to share with you the following clarifications:

Thailand is committed to democratic values and is making headway on the path toward elections in accordance with the Roadmap for Reconciliation, Reform and Elections.

The constitutional drafting process is being conducted in an inclusive and open manner and is proceeding as scheduled. The national referendum on the draft constitution will be held on Aug. 7, leading to general elections in 2017. In the meantime, the government is also undertaking comprehensive and people-centered reforms with the aim of promoting stability, prosperity and sustainability in Thailand.

During our crucial period of national reconciliation and reform, in which the government is resolute in its goal to restore democracy in Thailand, public order and social harmony are the key. Thailand attaches high importance to freedom of expression and respects human rights principles in accordance with global standards, and is seeking to strike the right balance between upholding freedom and ensuring security, especially in this transitional time when social division and discord can undermine our reconciliation and reform efforts.

We ask our friends and partners in the international community to recognize the progress Thailand has made, and will continue to make, on our path to a strengthened and sustainable democracy and to allow our reconciliation and reform efforts take their course.

Paskorn Siriyaphan
Ambassador of Thailand
