ecurity authorities at Adisucipto International Airport in Yogyakarta, Central Java, have managed to foil an attempt to smuggle 1.5 kilograms of dried marijuana.

“We have secured a package, which aroused suspicion, as evidence. Until now, security authorities are still tracing the sender [of package],” Adisucipto’s head of information division, Maj. Sus Giyanto said on Tuesday.

He said the dried marijuana was packed using a black plastic bag. It was sent with courier service JNE to Jakarta, addressed to WWW.ANHERBAL.BLOGSPOT.COM at a Tambora, West Jakarta, residence.

Had it not been intercepted, the package would have been brought to Jakarta by national flag carrier Garuda, on a flight scheduled to depart at 7:30 p.m. on Monday.

“However, several security personnel became suspicious with the package following x-ray baggage checks. Proving their suspicions right, after examining the package manually, they found it contained marijuana,” said Giyanto.

He said the airport’s authorities had handed over the package’s contents to police for further investigations to apprehend the sender.

The airport’s head of intelligence division, Lt. Col. Sus Imam Mahdiyawan, said the smugglers were possibly expecting lax and unfocused security staff during the beginning of the fasting month of Ramadhan, as many of the airport’s workers would be fasting.

“If the perpetrators were hoping for inattentive personnel, they were wrong because, in fact, security and surveillance is usually much tighter during the fasting month,” said Mahdiyawan. (ebf)
