A fire struck the West Sumatra's State Police School dormitory in Padang on Sunday evening, destroying 10 units and causing significant damage. No casualties were reported.
fire hit the dormitory of the Padang State Police School (SPN) in Indarung sub-district, Lubuk Kilangan district, Padang, West Sumatra, on Sunday evening.
The fire destroyed at least 10 residential units in Block E and damaged some 1,500 square meters of the compound, with material losses estimated at Rp 2.5 billion (US$154,273).
“We deployed seven fire trucks to the location to extinguish the fire,” Padang Fire Agency head Budi Payan said in a statement on Monday, as quoted by Antara news.
Firefighters received the initial report at 8:30 p.m., before arriving at the location at 8:41 p.m. Apart from the seven fire trucks, the team was also assisted by two fire trucks belonging to PT Semen Padang.
A total of 75 firefighters struggled to extinguish the flames in the dormitory complex.
Budi explained that the location was densely packed with houses situated close to one another.
"The area potentially affected covered up to 3,000 sq m, but fortunately, the fire was quickly brought under control by firefighters before it could spread," Budi said.
The SPN is a school for non-commissioned officer candidates in the West Sumatra Police. Graduates from the SPN leave with the rank of second brigadier.
The barracks were reportedly occupied by 10 officers at the time but there were no reports of any injuries. The Indarung sub-district office has submitted an official report to the Padang mayor’s office and relevant authorities to ensure follow-up actions in response to the fire's impact.
