ased on the infant mortality rate over the past year, an infant dies every day in Banyumas regency, Central Java, during delivery as a result of malnutrition and late handling.
The Banyumas Health Agency recorded 139 infant mortality cases as of the end of May. There were 36 cases of infant mortality in Banyumas in May alone.
Maternal and child health section head at the agency, Henny Soetikno, acknowledged that infant mortality cases in Banyumas had increased. Henny said the leading cause of infant mortality in Banyumas was low weight during delivery.
“They weigh less than 2,500 grams, followed by asphyxia or they don’t cry at birth,” Henny told the media on Monday.
She added regions with high infant mortality rates were Wangon, Lumbir, South Purwokerto and Rawalo districts. Henny acknowledged that maternal and child mortality could not be predicted but could be minimized.
