he Jakarta administration is upbeat it can finish three important infrastructure projects in time for the 2018 Asian Games, namely the light rail transit (LRT) system, a velodrome and a horse racetrack.
“Normally, the LRT project would take more than four years, but with the right planning and partner, we are confident that we can make it happen in two years,” Satya Heragandhi, president director of PT Jakarta Propertindo (Jakpro), the city-owned company in charge of the construction projects, said during the groundbreaking in East Jakarta on Wednesday.
The administration is expected to build 123 kilometers of intra-city LRT lines. Priority is given to routes that connect venues of the Asian Games scheduled to commence on Aug. 18, 2018.
The horse-riding facilities will be constructed according to designs from British company ES Global, while the construction of the velodrome will be supervised by Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI).
“We want Indonesia to become successful in the global economy […] to be on the world stage and take responsibilities. In a wider sense, we want the Asian Games to succeed so that the world can see Indonesia’s growing potential,” said UK Ambassador to Indonesia Moazzam Malik.
The velodrome in Rawamangun, East Jakarta, will measure 250 meters in length and 5.5 meters in width and have a capacity of 3,000 spectators. Meanwhile, the nearby equestrian facility in Pulomas will occupy a 34-hectare plot of land, 22 hectares of which will be allocated to the racetrack. (vps)
