Greater Jakarta: Asiad athletes may use Transjakarta lanes

J

akarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama has said athletes taking part in the 2018 Asian Games will be allowed to use Transjakarta lanes so they can move easily from one venue to another.

“We don’t want to call them Transjakarta lanes anymore. They are evacuation routes to evacuate people, buses, fire trucks, or important officials,” Ahok said.

Since last week, the city administration has been clearing Transjakarta lanes of private vehicles, a policy designed to provide the city with emergency routes and to discourage commuters from using private vehicles.

“Like other cities that host big events, Jakarta will certainly experience worse traffic congestion. Therefore, we hope the evacuation routes will be clear so we can maximize them [to move athletes],” Ahok said in Jakarta on Wednesday.

The Asian Games, which will start on Aug. 18, 2018, are to be held in Palembang, South Sumatra, Banten, Jakarta and West Java. The Olympics Council of Asia (OCA) has approved 37 sports to be played in the quadrennial multi-sporting event: 28 Olympic sports and nine non-Olympic ones.

However, concerns have increased because Jakarta is known as one of the cities with the worst traffic in the world. According to the Castrol Index in 2015, Jakarta ranked as the city with the highest number of stops and starts, with an average of 33,240 per driver per year.
