National scene: Court rejects drug lord’s case appeal

T

he Supreme Court has rejected a case review filed by drug convict Freddy Budiman, who was found guilty of smuggling 1.4 million ecstasy pills from China and is awaiting execution.

Previously, Attorney General Muhammad Prasetyo said Freddy was on the list of death row convicts to be executed in an upcoming third round of executions.

Prasetyo said the execution would not take place until the Supreme Court issued a decision on the case review.

“Yes, it is true that his case review has been rejected,” Supreme Court spokesman Ridwan Mansyur said on Friday as reported by kompas.com.

Freddy is also accused of coordinating further drug trafficking operations from inside prison, and was therefore moved to the high security prison island of Nusakambangan in Cilacap, Central Java, from his previous prison in Bogor, West Java.

On the court’s website, it was reported that the case review was received by the Supreme Court on July 13 from the West Jakarta District Court after it was submitted by Freddy’s lawyer, Untung Sunaryo.

Freddy was sentenced to death by the West Jakarta District Court in 2012.
