‘Last Supper’ at the Shang Palace

Shangri-La Jakarta hotel, South Jakarta

The Shang Palace at the Shangri-La Hotel, Jakarta, held a ceremonial dinner on July 18 to mark the closure of one of the city’s most renowned Chinese dining establishments after 22 years.

Slated for a update to its “Classic Oriental” decor, The Shang is expected to reopen by the year’s end with a look that is more contemporarily Chinese, along with touches of Indonesia.

The new Shang is also expected to offer after its reopening a new signature dish: Beijing Duck, a slow-roasted and succulent whole Peking Duck served with thin crepe-like Lotus Leaf Pancakes, hoisin sauce and finely sliced green onions.

Guests for the Shang’s “Last Supper” received a collection of vintage-style postcards depicting the restaurant over the years.

Alila Uluwatu offers up Indonesian style

Uluwatu, Bali

The Alila Villas Uluwatu recently relaunched The Warung, its destination Indonesian restaurant, with a fashion show and a selection of local delectables such as nasi liwet and Balinese favorites like ayam betutu and babi panggang braised pork ribs. Models clad in the designs of Biasa and sporting pieces from John Hardy, the Ubud-based luxury jewelry designer, walked through the swanky resort’s Sunset Cabana, perched on a cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean. The resort also presented its regular Friday offerings: Street-food treats prepared gourmet style in The Warung’s kitchen, served out of designer food carts and ready to be Instagrammed.

The resort, nestled on 270 hectares in West Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara, offers day-long spa safaris, some of the planet’s best surfing at Occy’s Left as well as a well-regarded equestrian center.

Farewell to Spanish DCM

Spanish Ambassador’s Residence, South Jakarta

Spanish ambassador Jose Viqueira Niel hosted a reception on July 13 to bid farewell to Rodrigo de la Vina Muhlack, the outgoing deputy chief of mission and a fixture of the local diplomatic community. A flamenco performance (with some touches of Balinese dance) was given by Angela Lopez, while four guests read from the fourth chapter of Don Quixote, the founding work of Western letters, penned by Cervantes, for whom Spain is currently observing the fourth centenary of his death. De la Vina, who speaks English, Portuguese and Indonesian, in addition to his native tongue, is bound for a posting in Cameroon.
