Police arrest five terrorism suspects in Klaten

D

ensus 88, the National Police’s counterterrorism unit arrested five terrorism suspects at multiple locations in Klaten, Central Java on Saturday.

They are suspected of having had roles in the July 5 bombing of Surakarta City Police headquarters.

The five were identified as Abdul Basid, Agus Suharyanto, Catur Budi Setiawan, Sutanto and Winarno. They were alleged to have assisted suicide bomber Nur Rohman.

Agus Suharyanto, who is Nur Rohman’s elder brother, was arrested at his house in Sorogaten, Tulung, a northern district of Klaten. The other four men were arrested in Gedongjetis area not far from Sorogaten.

All worked at a poultry farm in Tulung.

Densus 88 also searched the houses of the suspects, attracting the attention of locals to observe the process.

“I heard Nur Rohman once worked at a poultry farm before committing the suicide bombing, but I don’t know for sure,” Rahmanto, a local, said.

Klaten Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Faizal confirmed the arrests and raids but could not provide the operation’s complete details because it was Densus 88’s jurisdiction.

“Densus 88 will provide the information. The local police just facilitated it [the operation],” Faizal said.

He added that the five were arrested following intelligence they helped hide Nur Rohman while he was a fugitive.

Nur Rohman managed to escape from a police operation in Bekasi, West Java, in December 2015.

“I do not yet know the findings of the raids, including the items seized from the suspects’ houses,” said Faizal, assuring that the five terror suspects had been taken by Densus 88 to Central Java Police headquarters in Semarang for questioning.

Nur Rohman of Sangkrah village, Surakarta, blew himself at the Surakarta City Police headquarter on July 5. He entered the headquarters’ grounds by riding a motorcycle. His act injured a police officer.

Nur is suspected by counterterrorism authorities to have had several explosives in his possession when he fled the scene of a December 2015 police raid.

One of the bombs was believed to have been used in the July 5 attack.

Nur Rohman is a native of Surakarta, Central Java, which is also home to Abu Bakar Ba’asyir, the notorious radical Islamic cleric who has been linked to Al-Qaeda.

Investigation into the bomb attack on Surakarta Police headquarters has discontinued because the perpetrator died.

However, police continue their work on uncovering Nur Rohman’s network, as well as investigate other leads related to terrorism in the country.
