UN weather agency: La Nina likely, but expected to be weak

he UN weather agency says climate models suggest a cooling La Nina phenomenon will emerge in the third quarter, but it's not expected to be as strong as the recent El Nino behind droughts in parts of eastern Africa.
After six hot months this year, the World Meteorological Organization also says it's not clear whether La Nina can prevent 2016 from being the warmest on record.
La Nina involves a natural cooling of Pacific Ocean waters and generally follows El Nino, which carries the opposite effect. A strong El Nino lasting about nine months ended in May.
WMO's Rupa Kumar Kolli said Thursday that the prospect of La Nina can be a signal to some policymakers, such as to prepare for increased rainfall after the drier weather during El Nino.
