olorful lanterns have been strung up at Taman Cerdas in Jebres, Surakarta, and they have successfully attracted hundreds of people to the park to enjoy the night and take selfies.

Taman Cerdas administrator Hari Sapto initiated the installation of the colorful lanterns at the park last week. Initially, the park’s management displayed only around 10 lanterns.

“Looking at the enthusiasm of the visitors, we searched for more lanterns. Surprisingly, many people contributed lanterns to us. Within just one week, we received hundreds of lanterns,” Hari said Monday.

Every month, the park’s management will pick a different color theme for the lanterns, depending on the thing the park wants to celebrate.

The more than 200 lanterns currently displayed at the park are all red and white. Some lanterns are hung up at both corridors of the park while several others are hung on a canopy at the park.

The presence of the lanterns has made Taman Cerdas more beautiful. Around 500 visitors pack the park every night. Previously, the park could only attract dozens of people.

“For August, we have chosen Indonesia’s 71st year of independence as our theme. Therefore, we are displaying red-and-white lanterns,” said Hari.

The park’s management will turn on the lanterns every night throughout August from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

A traditional child’s play, cultural performances, traditional food festivals and several other attractions are also being prepared to enliven Independence Day celebrations at the park.

“Visitors can also participate in a quiz competition on the pillars of nationalism,” Hari said. (ebf)
