Two Indonesian silver medalists, weightlifters, Eko Yuli Irawan and Sri Wahyuni Agustiani, landed safely and, of course, proudly at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. The athletes were welcomed by the Youth and Sports Ministry’s acting secretary, Sakhyan Asmara, and Indonesia Sporting Committee deputy chairman Muddai Madang.
Sakhyan, representing Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrowi, praised both athletes for having secured medals at the prestigious Rio Olympics, saying they had made history. “Despite longing for gold, these two athletes have lifted the nation’s spirit,” Sakhyan said in a statement sent to The Jakarta Post on Monday.
He said he expected these victories to boost the athletes’ morale so they could aim for greater achievements ahead. Sakhyan also confirmed that a Rp 2 billion (US$152,000) bonus for each athlete was theirs to claim.
Besides the bonus, both athletes will also be granted Rp 15 million per month from the government for the rest of their lives.
Satlak Prima sport task force chief Achmad Sutjipto said he wasn’t entirely satisfied with the silver achievement, as he knew for certain that their ultimate target was gold. He expressed his hope that the weightlifters could improve their achievement at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.
“All stakeholders, namely the government, the Indonesian Olympic Committee [KOI], Satlak Prima, coaches and the athletes must join forces to make this happen at the upcoming Olympics,” he said.
Eko Yuli Triawan appreciated the support he said he had
received from day one from all stakeholders. He also confirmed that he still held ambitions for the Tokyo Olympics.
“Let’s aim for gold at the upcoming Olympics,” he said.
Sri Wahyuni asked for continuous support in the near future to encourage further success stories. “Don’t give up on Indonesian athletes,” Sri Wahyuni said.
Eko Yuli Triawan won the silver medal in the 62-kilogram class and Sri Wahyuni in the 48 kg category.
